Portugal Day, Camões Day and the Portuguese Communities Day
June 10th pays tribute to the Portuguese national identity and has a profound meaning. This day celebrates the life and work of Luís de Camões, one of the greatest poets in the Portuguese language, and recognizes the importance of Portuguese communities around the world and of Portugal.
Luís Vaz de Camões (1524-1580) is considered one of the greatest Portuguese poets. His most famous work, “The Lusiads”, is an epic poem about the exploits of Portuguese navigators, in particular Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. Camões is a symbol of Portuguese literature and culture, and his work is fundamental to the national identity.
The choice of June 10th is related to the death of Camões in 1580. Initially, the date was associated with the poet, but over the years the celebration expanded to the celebration of Portugal as a nation.
