The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, José Luís Carneiro, visits the Brazilian cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, between the 25th and 27th of January.

In both cities, public sessions entitled “Dialogues with Communities: Electoral Laws + Participation” will be held.

These initiatives aim to inform and clarify Portuguese citizens living abroad about the changes to electoral laws, approved in July 2018 by the Assembly of the Republic. It is expected that these changes will result in a significant increase in the number of Portuguese citizens registered abroad, as well as in a strengthening of their conditions for political and civic participation.

In Rio de Janeiro, the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities will sign a protocol between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, with a view to digitizing and enhancing the literary collection of several Reading Rooms founded in Brazil by Portuguese emigrants. These centuries-old institutions have a rich literary and cultural heritage that the Portuguese Government wishes to preserve.

José Luís Carneiro will also participate in the program “Portugal in the World” produced by RTP from Rio de Janeiro.
